While SBA has been located at its Hillsboro Road location since 1905, SBA’s current building on 24th Avenue South was constructed in 1960 as SBA’s then girls' high school.
Dedicated on September 24, 1960, the building included “10 general purpose classrooms, 5 specialized classrooms for chemistry, biology, home economics and typing.” It also included “a library, an administrative suite and a combined gymnasium-auditorium.” According to a news release from the time, “the school . . . (is) designed to contribute to the student's well being and to make the education process a pleasant and fruitful experience.” It included “the newest type of laboratory equipment, furniture of special design, excellent lighting, a controlled heating and ventilation system and soft pastel colors . . . resulting in a pleasing and productive school life.”
Today, the school is comprised of the same original building and additions bringing the total to seventeen general classrooms, a science lab, a computer lab, two music rooms and an art studio and in addition to the library, gymnasium/auditorium, locker rooms, offices, administrative areas, outdoor swimming pool and two playgrounds.
In 2004, SBA embarked on an ambitious building project to “to enhance the achievement of SBA’s mission” through the renovation and improvements to existing areas and the addition of 10,000 square feet including:
- Construction of new Kindergarten classrooms and an adjacent K-2 playground
- Renovations to aftercare facilities
- Renovation and enhancement of Junior High classrooms
- Construction of a dining hall/multi-purpose room and art studio
- Construction of a new computer lab
- Construction of a chapel
SBA is comprised of a total of 56,950 square feet under one roof on a 3.2 acre site. The facility has been specifically designed to support and accommodate SBA’s curriculum, programs and activities for up to 257 students in levels Pre-K through 8.
